Psalm 119:105-107, 111-114
105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
106 I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations.
107 I have suffered much, O Lord; restore my life again as you promised.
111 Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight.
112 I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end.
113 I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions.
114 You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope
How do Christians find their way through the world? How do we find safe passage? In the midst of our dark and foggy times, all sorts of voices are shouting orders and telling us what to do, how to adjust our lives.
“Your word – your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Think about that – the Bible is a __________________, a lighthouse shining in an often dark and confusing world.
How often do you think of the Bible as light?
What is darkness? Darkness is what makes you trip and fall. There’s a lot of darkness going around these days, and not all of it at 3:00 in the morning.
What is light? Light is one flashlight against the whole night…and it’s enough.
And Peter says, God’s word is a lamp shining in a dark place. And the Psalmist says, Your word, O God, is like a lamp – a light – for my feet.
But the Bible knows and you do too that the gift of light is the gift of ________________________________. And the gift of clarity is the gift of the Bible.
The Bible, for instance, clarifies our understanding of __________________. The Bible is God’s light for clearly seeing who God is.
The Bible is big, mysterious, unmanageable, and wonderful…kind of like God. The Bible is almost everywhere; first about God. That’s the Bible’s goal.
The Bible also clarifies our understanding of _________________________.
The Bible is God’s light for clearly seeing who we are. The Bible does not airbrush the nastiness out of life. It is shockingly honest about failures of those in its pages.
And the biggest difference between any one of us…is the words that define and direct us.
Hear the good word – the good news: “Your word, O God, is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
